The Chris Wood being signed to demoralise Burnley line is a bit daft. We were absolutely flapping, we looked destined for the drop even with the new owners and Howe, we'd lost our only striker (and by far the most important and influential player in the team Howe inherited), and we'd just lost to Cambridge Utd in the cup. Panic was setting in, and Wood's record in the PL looked alright – nobody was excited to sign him, but he seemed like a player who'd do a job and score a few goals, he always had for Burnley. Moreover people were starting to think seriously about what our Championship strategy would be, which players might not hang around for a campaign in the second tier during a World Cup year. Wood could have been an important player had we been relegated.
As it turned out, by the middle of February we were far too good for him, and his poor goalscoring form in the first half of the season continued. But in early January we just couldn't know that was going to happen and the signing made sense in the moment.
