No-See-Ems Are a Terrible Pest

No-see-ems are perhaps the most annoying pest. And 2017 is a banner year in the coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia. But what is a no-see-em and how can you avoid them?

No-see-ems are a very small pest also called sand fleas, sand gnats, midges, punkies or other four letter words not fit to print. They aren't invisible, but certainly small enough that you don't know they are there until you feel their unmistakable bite. If you see them in sunlight, they appear like lint or dust flying in the air. But make no mistake, these lightweight, tiny particles floating around you are there for only one reason – to bite you with razor sharp teeth and suck your blood.

No-see-ems breed in moist soil. This can be the pluff mud at the edge of the marsh, in irrigated yards, and there's a special fondness for athletic fields and golf courses. If you are a soccer player, you know exactly what these blood suckers are!

This coastal area of the world is a delight until the glorious days of Spring and Fall when around dusk, you are repeatedly bitten by the nearly invisible bugs referred to as flying teeth. To the locals, the only true name is No-see-ems.

These annoying pests are magnetized to your carbon dioxide as you exhale. They are also drawn in when you perspire. Their favorite location is your hair as they burrow towards your scalp and begin to feast. Bites of no-see-ems are like tiny, sharp stings as though being pricked with a needle. Then the bites immediately begin to itch.

Some victims are attacked along every square inch of exposed skin with a vengeance matched only by piranhas. Just a few moments outdoors for some can produce dozens of bites. And if you have an allergic reaction, may God help you.

No one is immune and some are like magnets. And the worst part is that if you want to be outside, so do they. Beautiful days with sunny, mild temperatures that beckon us outdoors means these monsters will be lurking.

What to do? Create a personal bubble of protection using a safe, natural product known to control no-see-ems. You can spray yourself, you can infuse your clothes, and you can even create large areas without no-see-ems by putting the product through your irrigation system!

Take back the beautiful days of Spring and Fall and control no-see-ems!

Pakistan’s Chances In The World Cup 2011

Pakistan has a realistic chance of winning the World Cup and more so because the pressure on them is much less compared to the other teams this time. Moreover they are not playing in front of their home crowds, but are still playing on familiar flat tracks. Beside being a very balanced side, this Pakistan team like always have players who can deliver a knockout punch at the most crucial stage of the game, which is very important in One Day format of the game. I expect Umar Akmal to be the trump card for Pakistan. Each player is capable of winning the match on his own. Ahmed Shahzad looks an exciting prospect. He could be even more dangerous on the subcontinent pitches. Mohammad Hafeez seems to coming into his own and can be crucial for Pakistan’s chances in the World Cup. His spin bowling in the middle overs could be handy.

Shahid Afridi can be a match winner on his day. If one of those days happens to be a game in the knockout stages of the World Cup, it will brighten Pakistan’s chances in the World Cup. What more could be said of Abdul Razzak. There is no other better all-rounder than Abdul Razzak in World crciket in shorter format of the game save Shane Watson. Yunus Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq can play perfect anchor and the other attacking batsman can play around them. Kamran Akmal can be a great finisher and can provide explosive start at the beginning of the innings. If Umar Akmal comes good, nothing can stop Pakistan from winning the World Cup. All the players in the current Indian team play almost in a similar style. They could play different sort of game according to the situation, but Pakistan has variety in their batting. Ahmad Shahzad is an attacking batsmen. Mohammad Hafeez can carry on the innings and has the ability to score quickly at the same time. Yunus Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq can play a waiting game and drop anchor. What follows is firecracker. Which team has batsmen like Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, and Abdul Razzak coming at 6,7, and 8. None of the team in the tournament has a more lethal late order than Pakistan. If I have to pick one team to win this tournament, It is Pakistan. They have everything in their favor. I would not be surprised if they also get a lot of crowd support from the crowd.

Football Playing Tips

Boost your cardio – An excellent cardiovascular workout is running 3 miles per day. This will help you at your peak fitness. It would be wise also for you to run uphill as much as you possibly can.

Increase your speed – Stand on a barrel or on a safe object with the same height. After that, land on both feet in a squatting position and stand up straight as fast as you possibly can. Ensure you are well stretched and wared up prior to performing such activity in order to avoid injury. This exercise indeed will strengthen quick reflex muscles in your legs.

Learn new skills – If you see new tricks by a professional, you must watch it very closely, over and over again prior to trying it. Experts recommend spending about 10 minutes daily for learning and mastering the trick. You must not try it in a game until you really can do it perfectly.

Play with both feet – Plenty of footballers play better with one foot than the other. Experts say that by concentrating on your weaker foot, you may have a quick win. It would be wise for you to use your weaker foot when kicking a ball against a wall. Apart from that, consider having a scratch game in training where everyone can play only with their weaker foot.

Tips For Improving Your Weaker Foot

There are different drills in order to improve your control, touches and balances. First, kick ups with your weaker foot. Kick up the ball using the laces section of your foot for about 5-10 minutes. Once you become better, do not let the ball bounce on the ground as long as you can.

Second, trap the ball with your weaker foot. Throwing the ball upwards and trapping it by allowing the ball fall on your toe part is indeed the simplest way of doing this. Once you notice some improvements, throw the ball against a wall and trap it with your weaker foot when it bounces back towards you. After making successful traps, throw the ball with increase intensity. Try controlling it with a single first touch.

There are indeed a lot of things you can do to improve your skill. Watch live football games to learn new tricks from professionals.

1983 – The Road of Kapil's Devils to a World Cup

No! I am not going to bore you with a story every child in India can tell you. I want to ponder a little on the Indian cricketing fortunes before the actual win. I watched an interview of Imran Khan recently and he said that India's win of 1983 was a higher achievement than his team's (Pakistan) 1992 victory in Australia. The simple reason he cave was that the quality of opposition in 1983 was higher. This Khan is not someone who will praise an Indian achievement easily. This should give you some idea about the magnitude of this achievement. And how important this man Kapildev was to Indian cricket!

The way Indian cricket developed since the British Raj will give you an idea that they were basically docile cricketers who played on docile wickets against strong and aggressive opponents. The test record of India around independence is terrible and I believe they played not to win but to not lose too badly. I think Pataudi Jr with a positive head to head record was the first captain that sort of instilled a fighting spirit in the team and a desire to win. Not to say that there were no aggressive players in the Indian team. In fact, India's first captain was CK Naidu who was a big guy and a big hitter. He flayed the MCC team in an innings of 153 in 2 hours that people still remember. He hit 11 sixes in the innings. He must have scared the living daylights out of the MCC bowlers. But winning in cricket consistently is not just about one man's heroics. Those were different times and probably it was a different scenario. The transition of Indian cricket team continued with Sunil Gavaskar who despite not aggressive by nature was an excellent thinker of the game and took the Indian cricket forward with quality batsmanship and captainship.

In came Kapildev in 1979 and a world-class aggressive bounce bowler and all-rounder arrived giving India the aggressive edge that it lacked. India played in the 1975 world cup but the only match they won was against East Africa. The next match they won was in 1978. Of course, there was not much one-day cricket played those days. This was followed by another terrible world cup in 1979 where they failed to win a single match. But slowly with the support initially from Karsan Ghavari and Roger Binny onto Madanlal, Sandhu and Mohinder Amarnath Kapil found pace bowling partners. Not life threatening quick bowlers but accurate and they could swing the ball. Now in the 1983 world cup team, except Sandhu all these bowlers were all all-rounders; this was another plus. Kapil himself had several qualities. Apart from being a world-class all-rounder, he was a great motivator. And that unbelievable hitting ability which can be matched only with Vivian Richards from his generation I think. Different batsmen mind you and Kapil was less reliable as a batsman than Viv but, when he came off, very very effective indeed. This man, out of nowhere, when everyone was ridiculing the Indians, installed a belief in the team that they could win. And they actually started winning matches in the Prudential Cup 1983. That innings against Zimbabwe and the catch of Viv Richards in the final tells you that this man was awesome and was game to the possibility of a world cup win when mere mortals would have given up .

He was supported wholeheartedly by the team in 1983. Boy, if the opponents had stepped into the Indian dressing rooms and, understood the good old Hindi, they would have realized who was going to win. The press and the opponents just kept thinking Indian victories on the road to finals were a fluke. Just about everyone in the team contributed to the team cause in one way or the other. This world cup win came against sides that were really great such as West Indies and Australia. Other good teams such as Pakistan, England put their claim forward but there was no stopping the Kapil's devils.

Like after every great victory the team had a lean period and Kapil lost captaincy as well. But the great man kept performing either with the bat or with the ball and sometimes both. There was a term for him in Indian cricket called "Dada" cricketer meaning he was like a big brother of the team. He could win matches from hapless situations just with his cricketing abilities alone. The way Kapil played his game, free of care and with just the goal in mind bought the team together to give the country its greatest sporting triumph for till date!

RushFit Renaissance Man Erik Owings – Trainer, Fighter, Zen Master?

The headliner, co-creator of GSP Rushfit, Georges St-Pierre, is certainly worthy of the attention he gets. After all, he is the current UFC Welterweight Champion and considered by many to be the best mixed-martial-arts (MMA) fighter in the world. «Rush,» as his fans called him, was born in Quebec and has been named Canadian athlete of the year for the last three years in a row. So superstar St-Pierre is certainly the right one to have his name and face on the GSP RushFit home workout program, but the program designer and St-Pierre’s trainer and partner in this venture, Erik Owings is also quite a fighting and fitness force in his own right.

Owings was born in Kentucky in 1979 and started training in karate at a very young age. At 19 Owings began to study Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with trainer Carlson Gracie Jr. After nearly two years studying, Owings went to the source and moved to Brazil to study at the renowned Gracie Barra Academy where he achieved the rank of Jiu Jitsu brown belt. Owings also spent some time training in Thailand and Europe. In 2006 he earned his black belt from Renzo Gracie and John Danaher and continues to train with them to this day.

He fought in five International Fight League (IFL) bouts. IFL is a now defunct league, which operated from early 2006 through mid 2008. Owings record was 3 wins and 2 losses. He won his first bought which was against American fighter Justin Jones in April 2006 then lost to Canadian Chris Haradecki; beat American Ed West and Russian Peter Kaljevic before losing in mid 2007 to Brazilian Wagnney Fabiano.

While competing in the IFL Owings was also working as a personal trainer in New York where often working in cramped spaces, he perfected many of the techniques, utilizing bodyweight and dumbbells that he used to develop the RushFit program. Some of the unique movements in the Rushfit program are entirely his own creation. Owens has said that he enjoyed coming up with challenging moves that even St-Pierre has trouble doing.

«Functional fitness» is a term Owings uses to describe the type of training he teaches and what RushFit is all about. Owings has explained that to mean fitness that is transferable into real life activity as opposed to just working on a particular muscle group or body part.

The GSP RushFit program came about when St-Pierre’s manager approached Owings and said they were looking for someone to design a fitness program for St-Pierre. Owings who had already been working on what was to become RushFit said he simply took what he had already developed and put more intensity into it. Anyone not familiar with RushFit, it is an extremely intense home workout program that leaves even the legendarily fit St-Pierre gasping for air in apparent exhaustion after many of the segments.

Today Owings lives in New York City and is the founder and owner of a MMA and fitness facility near Union Square. The gym is called Mushin Mixed Marshall Arts. Mushin is a Zen term that means «empty mind.» It refers to ones ability to hyper focus thoughts and energies on the task at hand. According to the Mushin website Owings’s training «clientele includes professional and amateur fighters, corporate CEOs and supermodels along with everyone in-between.» The gym has become somewhat known for being the gym of choice for Victoria Secret models. Somehow that seems oddly fitting for the gym founded by this philosophical fitness guru.

West Indies Cricket – A Resurgence?

In years to come the last fortnight could well be seen as the moment that West Indian cricket began its rise to regain its former position as one of the pre-eminent sides in the world. And make no mistake world cricket needs a successful and vibrant West Indies team.

Firstly, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indian Players Association (WIPA) have finally come to a mutual agreement that will see a first choice squad being selected for the forthcoming tour to Australia. Moreover, the last two weeks has seen an unheralded Trinidad and Tobago side take on and beat all comers in the inaugural T20 Champions League tournament in India.

Even if the side, which has been excellently led by Daren Ganga, fails to repeat its earlier success against New South Wales in the Final today, it is Trinidad and Tobago who will be remembered for lighting up the competition. The team’s togetherness, team spirit and refusal to give up lost causes has made them stars. What makes this all the more remarkable is the fact that Dwayne Bravo and Dinesh Ramdin aside, none of the players are considered first choice picks for the West Indies team.

All this suggests that the state of West Indian cricket may not be as terminal as many observers feared. If the spirit and quality shown by Trinidad and Tobago can be replicated by the West Indies Test and limited overs sides then there should be a steep upward curve in their ranking in all forms of the game. This is not to say that West Indian cricket is cured – the WICB still badly needs a restructure and needs to change its style and attitude to the players. Former players such as Michael Holding, Clive Lloyd and Sir Vivian Richards should be given prominent roles in the WICB so that the Board and the team unite in the interests of West Indian cricket. The board needs to recognise that the players need to get access to the riches available to them in English County Cricket and more so in the Indian Premier League. In return the players need to show the same fight and desire that their illustrious predecessors had when wearing the famous maroon cap.

All this won’t happen overnight – indeed it may never happen. But hopefully it is the start of a long road to former glories However, now that the impasse with the WICB has been bridged, at least the team can concentrate on preparing for the difficult assignment that awaits them in Australia where the first of a three test series starts in Brisbane on 26th November. Before then the selectors have an interesting task in picking the squad with several Trinidad and Tobago players making a good case for selection as well as Kemar Roach and Darren Sammy from the WICB XI that played in the Champions Trophy.

The first major decision the selectors have to make is who should captain the side. I think we can safely ignore the claims of Floyd Reifer who captained the WICB XI during the dispute between the board and WIPA. This probably leaves two options – Chris Gayle and Ganga. The laconic Gayle, who led the side before the dispute, had overseen an improvement in fortunes with a drawn series in New Zealand preceding the home triumph over England. He also led the team to the semi-finals of the World T20 and stated this week his desire to be reinstated as captain. «If I am asked to do the job I will be committed,» Gayle told Reuters. «It is always an honour to captain the West Indies. I am always committed to do it. Support-wise the players have been really good and it shouldn’t be a problem. Once I am asked to do it then, definitely.»

However, Ganga has impressed many observers with the way he has led Trinidad and Tobago. The raw ingredients of togetherness, willingness to fight for each other and the knack of someone being prepared to stick their hand up when something special is required are just what the West Indies needs. Although Ganga only averages 25.71 from 48 tests and has only scored three centuries, his fearless and vibrant captaincy makes this an interesting conundrum for the selectors. Ganga’s ability to unify individuals and make the collective stronger than the sum of its parts should win the day. If so he could bat in the middle order rather than in his usual opening role.

Gayle, along with Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul are obvious picks for the selectors. Trinidad and Tobago’s Lendl Simmons and 19 year old Adrian Barath should join them in the squad. The former has shown sporadically over the last year the quality needed at international level and now needs to become more consistent. Barath is an exciting prospect who already averages 46.05 in his first class career and could become the long term opening partner to Gayle at both Test and limited overs level. If the selectors want to pick a seventh batsman then Australian born Brendan Nash would appear to be the most likely.

Dwayne Bravo, who has the potential to become the World’s outstanding all-rounder now that Andrew Flintoff has retired and Jacques Kallis continues to get older is a shoo-in, as is Ramdin as wicketkeeper. Kieron Pollard has shown during the Champions League that he has temperament required for the big stage so could be a shrewd pick as cover for Bravo.

This brings us to the bowlers. Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards should both enjoy bowling on the bouncy Australian wickets. So should the extremely fast Roach who impressed against Bangladesh and during the Champions Trophy. Ravi Rampaul, Daren Powell and Sammy will all be in contention too. In the spin department, there is not as much strength in depth and Gayle will probably have to provide support to Sulieman Benn, who did reasonably well against England when they toured the Caribbean.

So, the Test squad could end up as follows:

Daren Ganga (C), Chris Gayle, Adrian Barath, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Dinesh Ramdin, Chadwick Walton, Sulieman Benn, Jerome Taylor, Kemar Roach, Fidel Edwards, Ravi Rampaul and Darren Sammy

There is no doubt that a tour to Australia is probably the toughest assignment of all, but with Ganga at the helm and a group of talented players in the squad the West Indies should at least be able to compete with Ricky Ponting’s side. The raw ingredients are there to cause a few surprises even if Australia will likely win the series. Cricket fans around the world hope that this is the start of a new dawn in Caribbean cricket.

More Comebacks Than Rocky

Having won 10 Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups, two Champions League titles and five FA Community Shields, Paul Scholes’s passion for Manchester United is unequivocal. He made a winning return to the side last season but will his decision to put his boots back on prove to be the right one? Let’s look at other athletes that have made comebacks with contrasting fortunes…

Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan retired from basketball in 1993. Whilst he cited lack of desire and ambition after leading the Chicago Bulls to three championship titles, it was suggested that the decision was based on the recent murder of his father. Jordan returned to basketball in 1995 and led the Chicago Bulls to three more championship titles. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2009 with its website declaring him «… the greatest basketball player of all time.»

Lance Armstrong

Cycling legend, Lance Armstrong, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1996 aged only 25, with a chance of survival at less than 40%. However, two years later he returned to the sport and went on to claim seven Tour de France titles, creating a rivalry with Jan Ullrich that is viewed as one of the greatest conflicts in sporting history.

Kim Clijsters

At 24 Kim Clijsters retired from professional tennis in 2007 having won three Grand Slams and been runner up in four more. She stated that her health and private family life were more important to her as she was constantly beset by injuries. After becoming a mother in 2008 she returned to the sport the very next year winning The US Open in 2009 and 2010 and the Australian Open title in 2011. She now boasts a total tournament tally of 41 WTA singles titles and 11 WTA doubles titles and is the only mother to have won a major title since Yvonne Goolagong in 1980.

Michael Schumacher

Few people have dominated their sport in the way Michael Schumacher did. Not only did Schumacher win the World Championship an unprecedented seven times, he continues to hold many driver records including most race victories, fastest laps, pole positions, points scored and most races won in a single season (13). He became the only driver in Formula One history to finish in the top three in every race of a season and then also broke the record for most consecutive podium finishes. Having retired in 2007, two years later he made a comeback with Team Sauber Mercedes but his former success has eluded him. Last season he failed to register a podium place and finished 316 points behind eventual winner, Sebastian Vettel.

Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson burst into boxing by becoming the youngest boxer to conquer the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles. His sporting career halted in 1992 when, following a very high profile trial, he served three years in prison for rape. Tyson made a series of comebacks but lost his heavyweight crowns to Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. Despite earning over £300 million dollars during his boxing career he was declared bankrupt in 2003.

So was Paul Scholes’s decision the right one? As a Football PR agency we would love to hear your thoughts – tweet us @ENSLtdsportPR
