History Behind the Invention of Shin Guards

Shin guards as the name implies are equipments for protecting the shin (the front of the lower leg form below the knee to above the ankle) in the course of a sport. It is used in various games like ice hockey and rugby. These items were made popular by soccer otherwise known as football and base ball.

Soccer is a game played by eleven people in one team, against another team in a rectangular field. Whichever team comes out of the game scoring the highest number of goals wins the game. Because of the nature of the game, players get kicked and injured on different parts of the body with the shin recording the highest amount of kicks and injuries.

Shin guards were therefore, invented for the protection of the shin. They are made of plastic covered with clothes; they carry claps by the side, which the player uses to fit into size with the leg. In most cases, the player covers it with his hose commonly called socks. In the late nineteenth century, Samuel Weller Widdowson solved the problem of constant avoidable and manageable injuries in a game.

He invented the soccer shin guard in Nottingham forest. The team of that town was the first ever to wear shin guards in a soccer game. These products are the only protective covering permitted for players in football soccer game. For base ball, these accessories were invented by roger Phillips Bresnahan.

He was an American base ball player and later manager from 1901 to 1945. Born in the year 1879 in Ohio, Roger played his first game 22 years later in the American league with the Baltimore team. Following closely behind, he played the nationals with New York Giants. After playing virtually every possible position in the game, Bresnahan finally settled for catching.

He eventually rose in his career to become the coach of the St’ Louis Cardinals then he moved to Chicago Cubs and finally to the Detroit tigers. It was at this point that he realized that catchers need protection in the game. Therefore, the invention of these guards for baseball catchers was an execution of his thoughts and dreams.

Aside from these accessories, there is also other protective gear worn by base ball players. They include leather gloves that are padded for catching the ball, protective helmets for batters, protective chest gear and a cage like mask for catchers. Only catchers wear shin guarding items in baseball, unlike in soccer where every player wears it. The use of protective shin guards cannot be fully emphasized.

The shin, apart from the fore head, is the only part in the body without sufficient flesh covering. Injuries at the shin can be very painful and takes a lot of time to heal. A hit at the shin goes directly to the bone and at the moment of the hit destabilizes the player. Protective shin guards have been modified with better synthetic materials to offer protection at the peak and at the same time very light so as not to weight on the player.

Things To Consider When Choosing Your Workout Kit

For many people, working out is often about looking super presentable and attractive rather than being fit. However, your prime concern must be the comfort you are getting in the clothes while working out. Your workout apparel is what that decides the levels of your comfort and has a great effect on your exercise too.

What you wear defines who you are. Similarly, the range of clothes for exercise varies for different workouts. Your prime concern while selecting your workout apparel should be the fabric it is made of, its fit and the comfort.

Not able to decide the perfect apparel for workout? Have a look at these points that will help you pick the best thing to wear while exercising. In order to select the clothes that fit well for your workout, we’ve jotted down a few things to keep in mind.

1. Choosing fabric that provides wicking:

A synthetic fiber that wicks away the sweat from your body will not only keep your body temperature cool while working out, but will also make you feel light and easy, allowing the air to cross through. Polyester, Lycra and spandex would work well.

If you don’t sweat profusely, then wearing cotton apparel would be good for light workouts like stretching and walking as cotton is a soft fabric. However when it gets heavy with sweat, it will cling to your body, making you uneasy.

2. Getting the right fit:

Choose the clothes that don’t get in the way of your workout activity. For exercises which involve lots of leg usage like running, jogging and cycling, wear short or capris that aren’t baggy or loose fitted.

For stretches, yoga, weight lifting or other workouts that don’t involve rapid movements you can use a pair of yoga pants that have better elasticity.

3. Appropriate tops:

Sleeveless tops and t-shirts are a perfect thing to wear while working out. Go for tops that aren’t too loose and have the ability of supporting your body, not flaring away. Sleeveless tops would help keep body sweat-free. These can also be worn in winter season as mostly gyms are centrally heated.

4. Change of clothing according to weather:

The workout clothing changes from season to season. In hot summers you are most likely to be wearing sleeveless shirts with shorts or capris whereas in winters, sweatshirts or a think jacket over t-shirt would work fine. But one must keep in mind not to go for very warm clothing in winters as the body temperature itself goes up while exercising.

5. The right footwear:

Choosing the right shoe for workout is very important. If your feet aren’t comfortable, you can never perform the workout properly. Wear a shoe that perfectly fits your foot and ankle but isn’t too tight to not let the air pass through. Thin sole shoes are a good choice as they don’t let the shoe get heavy due to sweat.

Try to keep your clothing as light as you can in order to have a relaxed workout which does not make you feel irritated and disgusted due to sweat. After all, workout is supposed to give you an ever charming, relaxed look!

Dutch Soccer Fan Forum – Sharing Ideas

Dutch soccer is indeed one of the popular sports in Denmark and due to fans overwhelming support of the Ajax Amsterdam clubs; they have created a Dutch soccer fan forum. This is made for the clubs information, awards and happenings. It is also about the national teams and about fans comments and suggestions as well.

As we all know forum is a way to attract viewers or to gain lots of ideas from them. Every sport has a forum and usually it represents the country interest and on what sports they really are into. For the love of soccer or perhaps any sport, fans give credit to their teams by creating a forum for them. Just like the Dutch Football where fans invented it to let everyone know that they are proud of their team.

Everybody loves to read on forums because it offers a lot of ideas and information regarding a certain topic. I have seen several forums about soccer and Dutch soccer fan forum is intriguing for me. I haven't heard much about Dutch soccer yet and reading to the forum makes me aware that they are indeed a football country too.

Its fun reading fans ideas and even sometimes they will fight for misunderstanding in the topics and comments. Fans would also get to know each other whether from Denmark or some other parts of the world. As far as I know Dutch has no rivalry with some other countries so the forum is purely about the game and opinions of fans regarding on national teams as well as the international leagues and events about soccer.

5 Mistakes Youth Soccer Coaches Make

Being a great youth soccer coach is not rocket science. You can do it, but you might need a bit of help to get off on the right foot. I’ve made plenty of mistakes over the years as a coach. Most of them weren’t fatal, but having a good understanding of the most common mistakes and how to avoid them will help you have much more fun as you develop your own winning team of soccer studs.

5 Coaching Mistakes You Must Avoid:

Mistake #1 – The No Fun Coach

Members of the media call the NFL the «No Fun League» because the commissioner has outlawed

the celebrations and other things that really make the game entertaining. Unfortunately, the same

can be said of the majority of youth soccer coaches. Remember whom you are coaching.

Remember their age and think about how kids this age see things. Put yourself in their shoes if you can and always ask yourself «Would I have enjoyed this when I was a kid?» I’ll give you a key hint here…Kids want to have fun playing soccer. They enjoy the game more when they get to touch the ball A LOT! They don’t want to stand in line.

Mistake #2 – The Survivor Coach

The basic premise of the hit show Survivor is that a group of people are left on a deserted island to fend for themselves. They are given a couple of items when they arrive, but are not allowed to bring anything with them. I have witnessed numerous coaches that come to practice with that same philosophy.

They hardly bring any equipment with them at all. Fortunately, you don’t need a ton of gear to run a quality soccer practice. With that said, having the right equipment can make all the difference between a losing team and one that gets better every single week. There are certain must-have items in your kit that so that you can go quickly from drill to drill and keep your players motivated and attentive. Be sure to bring plenty of balls and cones to every practice and things will run much more smoothly.

Mistake #3 – The Cool Hand Luke Coach

One of my favorite movie lines is from Cool Hand Luke where Strother Martin says, «What we have here is a failure to communicate.» Most coaches and parents have this same problem. Establishing a clear line of communication with your soccer parents can be the difference between a fun-filled season of soccer and a descent into the depths of hell. Soccer moms and dads can be your strongest advocates or worst nightmare. If you set up a good phone & email system ahead of time, you can bet that coaching your team will take less time, be less frustrating and be much more productive!

Mistake #4 – The Drill Sergeant Coach

Most of the drills that you find in coaching books take way too long to setup, don’t hold your kids interest and have your players standing around too much of the time. Good drills should feel more

like games to your kids. Your team shouldn’t spend all of their time waiting in line to kick the ball.

They should be actively involved in the drills, get lots of touches and be on the fast track to becoming better players. Look for drills that involve most of your players at the same time. Look for drills that minimize standing in line and maximize time with the ball at your players feet.

Mistake #5 – The Nutty Professor Coach

I am constantly amazed at the coaches I see that just show up with a bunch of balls, some orange

cones and NO plan. They either forget what they were going to do, or don’t have any idea in the first place.

In order to get the most out of your weekly practices, you need a solid plan for each practice. Ever see a coach who’s team is running around all out of control? If you don’t have a plan for your team, they will quickly develop a plan for you. Players should move from drill to drill and spend the majority of their time actually playing soccer. Designing a good practice plan can take a lot of time, but it is worth it.

Make sure that your players get a good warm up, individual skill time, group skill time & group game time in each and every practice.

In Conclusion

What kind of coach do you want to be? A frustrated, pulling your hair out babysitter? Or a fun-loving coach that is developing awesome soccer players on a weekly basis?

The Great World Cup Germany 2006

The 2006 FIFA World Cup (officially titled 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, sometimes referred to as the Football World Cup) finals are scheduled to take place in Germany between 9 June and 9 July 2006. Qualification for the tournament is now complete, with all 32 competing teams confirmed. The 2006 finals are the 18th to be contested.

A total of 12 German cities have been selected to host the World Cup final tournament. The stadium capacities shown are all seated capacities. Many of the stadiums have higher capacities for German domestic football matches as some of the seats are replaced with terraces.Starting from Germany 2006, the winner of the past World Cup had to qualify for the Finals. Only the host nation qualifies automatically from 2006 on.

In the qualification process for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the six FIFA confederations were allocated a share of the 32 spots available on the basis of the strength of their teams. The final distribution was as follows:Europe – represented by UEFA : 51 teams competing for 13 places (Germany qualified automatically as host nation for a total of 14 places) ;Africa – 51 teams;South America -10 teams;Asia – 39 teams;North, Central American and Caribbean -34 teams;Oceania – 12 teams.

For the first time ever, the defending champion (Brazil) does not qualify automatically. The hosts (Germany) will retain their automatic spot. In 1934, the defending champions (Uruguay) declined to participate and the hosts (Italy) had to qualify, but in the tournaments between 1938 and 2002 (inclusive), the hosts and the defending champions had automatic berths.

The original distribution of places between the six confederations called for Oceania to be given one full spot in the final 32; however, this idea was seen as giving Australia a virtually certain place in the finals, being by far the strongest footballing nation in their region. This decision was reconsidered in June 2003 and the previous distribution of places between Oceania and South America was restored.

The main surprises in European qualification at World Cup Germany were the absences of 2002 third-place finishers Turkey (eliminated by Switzerland after a momentous playoff), 2004 European Champions Greece (eliminated by the Ukraine), and established sides Denmark (eliminated by the Ukraine as well), Russia (eliminated by Portugal), and Belgium (eliminated by Serbia-Montenegro and Spain). In Africa, 2002 quarter-finalists Senegal (eliminated by Togo) and established sides South Africa, Cameroon, and Nigeria (eliminated, respectively, by Ghana, C?te d’Ivoire, and Angola) unexpectedly missed the trip to the Finals. The other zones saw no major upsets. While representing Oceania, from the beginning of 2006 Australia is part of the Asian Confederation, and will represent Asia in following World Cups.

If teams are even on points at the end of group play, the tied teams will be ranked as follows:greater number of points obtained in matches between the tied teams, goal difference in matches between the tied teams, greater number of goals scored in matches between the tied teams, goal difference in all group matches, greater number of goals scored in all group matches,a play-off on neutral ground, with extra time and penalties if necessary (in qualifying),drawing of lots (at the final event). This is a change from the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where total goal differential was the first tiebreaker.

Thirty-two years after the last football World Cup in Germany, the 2006 FIFA World Cup will again take place in Germany. For the first time after the reunification of both German states, the entire world will look to the New Germany, situated at the heart of Europe.
